What is Roots of Resilience?
North River Commission is working with The Morton Arboretum’s Chicago Region Trees Initiative (CRTI) through its Trees for Disadvantaged Communities grant program to expand Albany Park’s tree canopy and advance tree equity. The program supports urban forestry projects in communities that have historically experienced inequitable access to green infrastructure and the many benefits trees provide.
Through this project, NRC is planting trees, providing community education, and creating opportunities for residents and local partners to help shape where new trees are needed most. Trees can provide shade, improve air quality, help manage stormwater and flooding, support wildlife, and make neighborhoods healthier and more resilient.
Our work is part of CRTI’s larger effort to make trees healthier, more abundant, more diverse, and more equitably distributed throughout the Chicago region. By working alongside residents, schools, businesses, community organizations, and other local partners, NRC is helping bring those goals to life in Albany Park - putting down roots for a greener, healthier, and more equitable neighborhood.
